India’s only orangutan Bini dies in Nandankanan Zoological Park

  • India’s only orangutan Bini has died in the Nandankanan Zoological Park (NZP) Odisha on May 29, 2019.
  • 41-year-old orangutan was an extant species of great apes.
  • According to NZP, ‘Bini’ died due to age-related complications. He also suffered from respiratory tract infection.
  • The orangutan was taken out of the enclosure a year ago.
  • The lone female orangutan was brought from Pune zoo on November 20, 2003.
  • Tissue samples were collected for further investigation to correlate the cause of death.
  • Orangutans are one of the world’s three extant species of great apes and are native to Indonesia and Malaysia. Orangutans are currently found only in the rain forests of Borneo and Sumatra.
