Euthalia zubeengargi-A New butterfly species named after Zubeen Garg

In a tribute to Assam’s cultural legacy, a newly discovered butterfly species in Arunachal Pradesh has been named after late music icon Zubeen Garg, who passed away in September 2025.

The species, scientifically named Euthalia zubeengargi, was recorded during field surveys conducted in 2025 in the forests of Leparada district. Researchers have proposed the common name “Basar Duke” for the butterfly.

Belonging to the genus Euthalia, the species is part of a group widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia. Butterflies in this genus are typically found in forested habitats and are recognized for their earthy brown wings adorned with pale spots.

Field observations indicate that Euthalia zubeengargi prefers cool, shaded forest interiors. It was often seen resting on low vegetation, feeding on tree sap, and occasionally gathering minerals from damp surfaces near streams—a behavior commonly known as “mud-puddling.”
