Why in News?
The 18th edition of the India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise Nomadic Elephant 2026 commenced on 21 September 2026 at the Foreign Training Node in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. The annual exercise, being conducted alternately between India and Mongolia, will continue until 3 October 2026, with 45 personnel from each country participating.
About Nomadic Elephant
Nomadic Elephant is a bilateral annual military exercise between the Indian Army and Mongolian Armed Forces. The exercise aims to enhance the joint military capability of the two forces to conduct counter-insurgency operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain under a United Nations mandate.
The exercise focuses on tactical-level operations, exchange of best practices, refinement of operational drills and strengthening of interoperability between the two armies.
The training curriculum of Nomadic Elephant 2026 includes Cordon and Search Operations, Room Intervention Drills, Special Heliborne Operations and Cyber Security Training.
The previous edition was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in May–June 2025.
