First Shamonda virus infection in human reported in France

Why in News?

French authorities have reported the first documented human infection with the Shamonda virus, which had previously been identified in animals. The patient, who was being treated in Lyon for a serious underlying illness and had severe immune deficiency, died in early October 2026. The case has drawn scientific attention because it may represent a species-jump or spillover event.

About Shamonda Virus

  • Virus group: Belongs to the genus Orthobunyavirus.
  • First detected: Nigeria, in the mid-1960s.
  • Known animal hosts: Primarily cattle; detections have also been reported in other animal species.
  • Geographical distribution: Reported sporadically in parts of Africa and Japan.
  • Associated vector: Culicoides biting midges, which are tiny blood-feeding insects.
  • Established transmission cycle: The virus is associated with livestock and is transmitted between susceptible animals by infected biting midges.

How Is It Transmitted?

  • Infected Culicoides biting midges feed on susceptible animals and can transmit the virus.
  • French authorities consider the bite of an infected midge the likely explanation for the reported human infection.
  • The patient was in eastern France, where the virus had reportedly circulated among animals during spring and summer 2026.

What Is a Species Jump or Spillover Event?

A spillover event occurs when a pathogen infects a host species outside the population in which it was previously recognised or studied.

  • Such events may reveal that a pathogen can infect humans or other previously unrecognised hosts.
  • They can help scientists identify emerging infectious-disease risks.
  • Further investigation is needed to determine whether the pathogen can survive, replicate and cause disease efficiently in the new host.
  • A single human infection does not establish sustained human-to-human transmission or indicate that the virus can spread efficiently among humans.
