Global Initiative on the Taking of Migratory Species (GTI)

The Global Initiative on the Taking of Migratory Species (GTI) was launched during a special event at the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals COP15 held in Campo Grande, Brazil.

Background

The 2024 State of the World’s Migratory Species Report highlighted that illegal and unsustainable taking threatens nearly 70% of the 1,200 species listed under CMS.
“Taking” includes activities such as hunting, fishing, trapping, or harvesting of migratory species.

About the Global Initiative (GTI)

The GTI is a global effort aimed at addressing the growing threat of unsustainable exploitation of migratory species.
It seeks to strengthen international cooperation and conservation action among CMS member countries.

Objectives of GTI

The initiative aims to:

  • Provide coordinated support to CMS parties
  • Fill gaps in global conservation frameworks
  • Equip countries with tools, knowledge, and partnerships
  • Promote sustainable use and protection of migratory species
