Global Passport Index (GPI) 2026

The 5th edition of the Global Passport Index (GPI) 2026 has been released by Global Citizen Solutions. The index ranks passports based on their overall value, going beyond traditional visa-free travel rankings.

  • It evaluates passports on global mobility, investment opportunities, and quality of life, providing a more comprehensive assessment of passport strength.
  • Europe continues to dominate the rankings, with nine of the world’s top ten passports belonging to European countries.

Methodology: The Global Passport Index evaluates passports using three weighted pillars:

  • Enhanced Mobility50%
  • Investment25%
  • Quality of Living25%
  • These pillars are measured using 14 different indicators, assessing not only travel freedom but also opportunities for living, working, and investing abroad.

Top 3 Countries in GPI 2026

  1. Sweden
  2. Switzerland
  3. Finland
  • Sweden secured the top position due to its balanced performance across:
    • Strong global mobility
    • High quality of life
    • Attractive investment environment

India’s Performance

  • India ranks 125th out of 197 countries in the Global Passport Index 2026.
  • India slipped one place from 124th in 2025, but improved from 127th in 2021.
  • India’s composite score reached a five-year high of 45.1.
  • India’s:
    • Mobility ranking: Around 135th
    • Quality of Living ranking: 118th

Visa-Free Access for Indian Passport Holders: The report states that the Indian passport provides visa-free access to 26 countries.
