Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF)

Why in News?

Recently, the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) came into international focus after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticised his National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir over a controversial video mocking detained pro-Palestinian activists aboard the flotilla. The incident triggered widespread global outrage and renewed attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

What is the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF)?

The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) is an international civil society-led maritime coalition that seeks to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza while opposing Israel’s naval blockade. The term “Sumud” is an Arabic word meaning “steadfast perseverance” or resilience.

Key Features

  • The GSF is a coalition of four groups: the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the Global Movement to Gaza, the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla, and Sumud Nusantara.
  • The organisation describes itself as a non-governmental and non-partisan movement consisting of doctors, students, trade union workers, activists, and seafarers from around the world.
  • The flotilla intensified its operations after the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel and the subsequent restrictions imposed on aid entering Gaza.
  • Its first major voyage began in August 2025 from ports in Spain and Italy with more than 50 vessels representing at least 44 countries.
  • The latest flotilla missions reportedly involved over 70 boats and participants from more than 70 countries, making it one of the largest civilian maritime solidarity efforts for Palestine.
  • Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg participated in the missions and was reportedly detained twice by Israeli authorities during flotilla interceptions.

Background

Israel imposed a naval blockade on Gaza in 2007 after Hamas took control of the territory. Israel argues that the blockade is necessary for security and to prevent arms smuggling, while humanitarian organisations and activists claim it has severely restricted aid and worsened living conditions in Gaza.

Significance

The Global Sumud Flotilla has become a symbol of international civil society support for Palestine and has drawn global attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, the legality of the naval blockade, and the broader Israel–Palestine conflict.
