Govt extends tenures of Cabinet Secretary TV Somanathan

Why in News?

The Government of India has approved a one-year extension in the tenure of Dr. T.V. Somanathan as Cabinet Secretary, extending his service beyond 30 August 2026.

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has also approved a one-year extension for Govind Mohan as Home Secretary

About the Cabinet Secretariat

The Cabinet Secretariat functions directly under the Prime Minister and plays a crucial role in ensuring coordination and effective functioning across the Union Government.

The administrative head of the Secretariat is the Cabinet Secretary who is also the ex-officio Chairman of the Civil Services Board. 

Its major functions include:

  • Administering the Government of India (Transaction of Business) Rules, 1961.
  • Administering the Government of India (Allocation of Business) Rules, 1961.
  • Providing secretarial assistance to the Cabinet and its Committees.
  • Facilitating inter-ministerial coordination.
  • Resolving differences among Ministries and Departments.
  • Building consensus through Standing and Ad-hoc Committees of Secretaries.
  • Facilitating the development and implementation of new policy initiatives.
  • Coordinating the government’s response during major crisis situations.
  • Coordinating the activities of different Ministries and Departments during emergencies.
