Gujarat Athlete Genome Database

As Gujarat prepares to host the Commonwealth Games 2030, the state government has launched an innovative Sports Genomics Programme to identify and nurture athletic talent using genetic science.

Implementing Agencies: The programme is being implemented by the Gujarat Biotechnology Research Centre in collaboration with the Sports Authority of Gujarat under the Department of Science and Technology.

Key Features

Whole genome sequencing: The initiative will conduct whole genome sequencing of athletes to identify genetic markers linked to endurance, power, and strength, while collecting 10,000 samples over five years across 10 sports disciplines.

Scientific Basis: According to Snehal Bagatharia, genetic factors may account for up to 66% of athletic performance, and a 2023 study identified 128 genetic markers associated with different athletic abilities.

Objectives: The programme aims to create a Gujarat Athlete Genome Database, enable early talent identification, design personalised training programmes, and assess injury risks and rehabilitation needs

Significance: This initiative is expected to diversify Gujarat’s sports culture beyond cricket, promote data-driven training, and position the state as a leader in sports biotechnology in IndiaConcerns: Experts have raised concerns regarding genetic data privacy, potential misuse of information, and ethical issues related to genetic profiling in sports.
