Gujarat Forest Department on Alert Over Suspected Babesia Infection in Asiatic Lions

The Gujarat forest department has intensified monitoring measures following the deaths of lion cubs from suspected Babesia infection in Gir Somnath and Amreli districts. As a precautionary step, big cats within a 10-km radius of the affected areas are being isolated to prevent any possible spread of the disease.

About Babesia

  • Babesia is a genus of single-celled protozoan parasites that infect red blood cells.
The infection caused by these parasites is known as babesiosis, a malaria-like disease.
  • Babesia parasites are primarily transmitted through the bite of infected Ixodes ticks, which act as disease vectors.
  • Ticks become more active during hot and dry environmental conditions, increasing the risk of transmission among animals.
  • Babesiosis may cause: fever, fatigue, weakness, Hemolytic anemia (destruction of red blood cells).
  • In severe cases, the disease can become life-threatening, particularly in animals or individuals with weakened immunity.
  • Babesiosis is caused by apicomplexan parasites belonging to the genus Babesia.
  • More than 100 species of Babesia have been identified globally, though only a limited number are known to infect humans.

Why Wild Animals Become Vulnerable in Summer

  • During summer, rising temperatures and dry environmental conditions increase physiological stress in wild animals.
  • Such conditions can weaken immunity and make animals more susceptible to tick infestation and secondary infections.
