Haryana’s first constellation at the Saraswati Wildlife Sanctuary

Haryana has developed its first constellation-themed garden, called ‘Nakshatra Vatika’, at the Saraswati Wildlife Sanctuary in the Seonsar forest area of Pehowa. The state government is now planning to establish similar gardens in other districts.

What is Nakshatra Vatika?

Nakshatra Vatika is a special garden based on ancient Indian astronomical and ecological traditions, where trees associated with the 27 nakshatras (constellations) are planted.

The project was developed by the Haryana Sarasvati Heritage Development Board (HSHDB).

Key Features

  • The garden includes plantation of trees linked with the 27 nakshatras mentioned in traditional Indian beliefs.
  • Information boards explain both the scientific and traditional significance of each tree.
  • The project aims to spread awareness about the relationship between planetary movements, constellations, and specific trees in Indian traditions.
  • The garden was inaugurated during Van Mahotsav by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

Future Expansion

Encouraged by public response, the Haryana government plans to develop similar Nakshatra Vatikas in:

  • Kurukshetra,
  • Kaithal, and
  • Adi Badri forest area in Yamunanagar.

The project promotes:

  • Environmental conservation,
  • Awareness of traditional ecological knowledge,
  • Biodiversity protection, and
  • Cultural heritage linked to astronomy and nature in ancient India.
