Himanta Biswa Sarma takes oath as Assam Chief Minister for second straight term

Himanta Biswa Sarma took oath as the Chief Minister of Assam on May 12, 2026, as the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) formed the government in the state for the third consecutive time.

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy to Sarma at a grand ceremony held at Khanapara.

This marks Sarma’s second consecutive term as Chief Minister after he first assumed office in 2021.

BJP-NDA Scripts Historic Third Consecutive Victory

Under Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, the BJP-led NDA has consolidated its political dominance in Assam by forming the government for the third straight term.

The 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections were held on April 9, 2026, to elect members to the 126-member Assembly. Results were declared by the Election Commission of India on May 4, 2026.

The elections delivered a decisive mandate in favour of the NDA, which secured a three-fourths majority in the Assembly.

Seat Tally

  • BJP: 82 seats
  • Bodoland People’s Front (BPF): 10 seats
  • Asom Gana Parishad (AGP): 10 seats

Opposition Parties

  • Indian National Congress (INC): 19 seats
  • All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF): 2 seats
  • Raijor Dal (RJRD): 2 seats
  • All India Trinamool Congress (AITC): 1 seat

The BJP alone crossed the majority mark comfortably, registering its highest-ever tally in Assam.

Comparison with 2021 Elections

In the 2021 Assam Assembly elections:

  • BJP had won 60 seats, and
  • Congress had secured 26 seats.

The 2026 results therefore indicate a substantial expansion of BJP’s electoral strength in the state.
