Why in News?
The Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), GoI has signed an agreement with Chennai-based Agnikul Cosmos Pvt. Ltd. to provide ₹200 crore financial support under the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund for developing the reusable Agnibaan launch vehicle. The project aims to advance the technology from Technology Readiness Level (TRL)-4 and above to TRL-8.
About Agnibaan RLV
The Agnibaan Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) is aimed at developing an indigenous and highly reusable space transportation system capable of supporting frequent and repeatable launches. Unlike conventional approaches that primarily focus on recovering the first stage, the proposed architecture seeks to move towards a fully reusable launch system.
The project is expected to reduce launch and manufacturing costs while also minimising the generation of space debris. The financial assistance will be provided through Optionally Convertible Debentures (OCD).
Key Features
The proposed Agnibaan RLV architecture will incorporate a lightweight upper stage, precise orbital insertion capabilities and a semi-cryogenic liquid propulsion system. Its propulsion system is designed with deep-throttling and restart capabilities, providing greater flexibility during missions and enabling repeated use of the launch vehicle.
