India and Indonesia Sign Agreement to Jointly Develop Sabang Port

India and Indonesia have signed an agreement to jointly develop the strategically located Sabang Port at the northern tip of Indonesia’s Sumatra Island, strengthening bilateral maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.

The project is expected to provide India with a strategic foothold near the Strait of Malacca, one of the world’s busiest and most critical maritime trade routes.

Sabang Port is located about 160 km from India’s upcoming Great Nicobar International Transshipment Port, enhancing India’s strategic presence in the eastern Indian Ocean.

The Strait of Malacca, situated between Sumatra (Indonesia) and Peninsular Malaysia, connects the Andaman Sea (Indian Ocean) with the South China Sea (Pacific Ocean) and serves as one of the world’s most important maritime chokepoints.

A substantial share of global trade and energy supplies passes through the Strait of Malacca, making it vital for international shipping and regional security.

For China, the Strait is a critical economic lifeline, with nearly 80% of its crude oil imports and around 60% of its merchandise trade (by volume) transiting through this narrow waterway.

For India, the Sabang project complements the Great Nicobar Transshipment Port, providing a strategic presence on both sides of the northern entrance to the Strait of Malacca.

The project is expected to enhance India’s Act East Policy by improving maritime connectivity between the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Indonesia’s Aceh Province.

The agreement is also expected to strengthen maritime security, regional connectivity, trade cooperation, and strategic collaboration between India and Indonesia in the Indo-Pacific region.
