India–Cyprus Relations

Why in News?

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, paid a State Visit to India from 20–23 May 2026 at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit gained significance as Cyprus currently holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. 

Key Highlights of the Visit

  • The visit built upon the momentum created by Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Cyprus in June 2025.
  • Both countries reviewed the implementation of the India–Cyprus Joint Action Plan 2025–2029.
  • The two sides agreed to commemorate the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027 through special events and exchanges.
  • The visit marked a transition of bilateral relations toward a more implementation-driven strategic partnership.

Cooperation on International Issues

  • Both countries reaffirmed support for the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP).
  • President Christodoulides appreciated India’s contribution to UN peacekeeping operations in Cyprus.
  • India and Cyprus also stressed the need for strong global action against terrorism.

1267 UNSC Sanctions Committee

Both countries called for coordinated action against terrorists and terrorist entities designated under the 1267 UNSC Sanctions Committee.

What is the 1267 Sanctions Committee?

The 1267 Committee, formally called the ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions Committee, is a body of the United Nations Security Council responsible for:

  • Imposing sanctions on terrorists and terrorist organisations,
  • Monitoring global compliance with sanctions,
  • Targeting individuals and entities linked with ISIL, Al-Qaida, and associated groups.

The sanctions include:

  • Asset freezes,
  • Travel bans,
  • Arms embargoes.
