India develops first indigenous expendable turbo jet engine in 350 kg thrust class

India has developed its first indigenous Expendable Turbojet Engine in the 350 kg thrust class, marking a significant achievement in aerospace propulsion technology.

The engine has been developed by the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The engine was successfully realised and delivered to GTRE by Azad Engineering, a Hyderabad-based company.

Azad Engineering is serving as DRDO’s industry partner for the manufacturing and assembly of the engine.

The 350 kg thrust-class expendable turbojet engine is designed to power cruise missiles, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), drones and other platforms requiring turbojet propulsion.

The development is expected to strengthen Aatmanirbhar Bharat by enhancing India’s self-reliance in critical aerospace propulsion technologies.

Jet engine technology is considered one of the world’s most sophisticated engineering disciplines and has been mastered by only a handful of countries.

The development of such engines requires exceptional precision, advanced metallurgy and stringent manufacturing standards.

The indigenous development of the engine represents an important step towards reducing dependence on foreign technologies in aerospace propulsion.

The technology could contribute to strengthening India’s capabilities in cruise missiles, UAVs, drones and other defence platforms, thereby supporting the country’s goal of achieving greater self-reliance in defence production.
