India formally names 27 places in Arunachal Pradesh

India on August 7 formally standardised the names of 27 places in Arunachal Pradesh on the official Indian map, in response to China’s repeated attempts to rename locations in the border State.

According to the Government of India, the 27 locations include 21 land areas, four mountain passes, one lake and one monument.

The 21 land areas are Longju, Maja, Bisa, Bara Kundun, Chhota Kundun, Dhan Bari, Pritnagar, Buddhamandir, Jairampur, Teritnagar, Ramnagar, Jaswant Garh, Sagar, Padma, Jyotinagar, Baisakhi, Chhota Ropuk, Bara Ropuk, Shivaji Nagar, Sunpura and Kamlang Nagar.

The four passes included in the official list are Dzo La, Riza La, Pukur La and Thag La.

The list also includes Sambho Sarovar Lake and the Sher-e-Thapa Memorial.

Longju, located along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), was one of the earliest flashpoints between India and China in 1959, when Chinese forces entered the area.

Thag La is a strategically important high-altitude pass where one of the opening battles of the 1962 India-China War took place.
