India hosts Kimberley Process Intersessional Meeting 2026 in Mumbai

India on May 12 inaugurated the Kimberley Process (KP) Intersessional Meeting 2026 in Mumbai under its Chairship, bringing together representatives from participating countries, industry bodies and civil society organisations to deliberate on the future of responsible and sustainable diamond trade.

The four-day meeting, being held from May 11 to May 14, focuses on strengthening monitoring mechanisms, compliance systems, and consumer confidence in the global natural diamond value chain amid evolving international challenges.

Focus Areas of the Meeting

The meeting includes discussions by various working groups and committees on major aspects of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), including:

  • Monitoring and compliance measures,
  • Artisanal and alluvial diamond production,
  • Statistical systems, and
  • Strengthening trust in ethically sourced natural diamonds.

The deliberations aim to improve transparency and accountability in the global diamond trade.

India’s Chairship Theme: The “3Cs”

India’s Chairship theme for 2026 is centred around the “3Cs”:

About the Kimberley Process

The Kimberley Process was established after the adoption of United Nations General Assembly Resolution 55/56 in 2000.

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme was created to prevent “conflict diamonds” or “blood diamonds” from entering the legitimate international diamond trade.

Conflict diamonds refer to diamonds mined in war zones and sold to finance armed conflict against governments.

Membership and Participation

The Kimberley Process currently comprises:

  • 60 participants representing 86 countries,
  • With the European Union and its member states participating as a single bloc.

India assumed the Chairship of the Kimberley Process on January 1, 2026.

India’s Role in the Global Diamond Industry

India is one of the world’s leading centres for:

  • Diamond cutting,
  • Polishing, and
  • Processing.
