Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Shri Pralhad Joshi delivered India’s national statement at the 16th Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) on 11 January 2026 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, reaffirming India’s strong commitment to a just, equitable, affordable, and sustainable global energy transition.

Ambitious Climate and Energy Targets Reiterated

The Minister reiterated India’s pledge to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel installed power capacity by 2030 and to attain Net Zero emissions by 2070, underscoring the country’s long-term vision for climate action and sustainable development.

India Achieves NDC Target Ahead of Schedule

Highlighting a major milestone, Shri Joshi informed the Assembly that India has achieved 50 per cent of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources in 2025, five years ahead of its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) target under the Paris Agreement.

Renewable Capacity Crosses 266 GW

India’s non-fossil fuel energy capacity has crossed 266 GW, positioning the country among the global leaders in renewable energy deployment. The achievement reflects sustained policy support, large-scale renewable deployment, and growing investor confidence in India’s clean energy sector.
