Why in News?
India has entered the Guinness World Records by constructing the world’s longest steel slag road, measuring 1.85 km, at Raigarh, Chhattisgarh. The project demonstrates the large-scale use of indigenous technology that converts processed steel slag into aggregates for road construction.
About Steel Slag Road Technology
Steel slag is a by-product generated during steel production. After suitable processing, it can be used as an aggregate in road construction, thereby converting an industrial waste material into a useful construction resource.
The Steel Slag Road Technology is being pursued by the CSIR-Central Road Research Institute (CSIR-CRRI), New Delhi, with participation from the private sector. The technology can potentially reduce road construction costs by around 40% and provide roads with about four times the strength of conventional roads.
