INDIAN NAVY COMMISSIONS ‘INS MANGROL’

Why in News?

The Indian Navy commissioned INS Mangrol (P82), the third Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on 12 October 2026. The vessel strengthens India’s indigenous naval capabilities and reflects the government’s emphasis on Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India.

About INS Mangrol

INS Mangrol has been indigenously designed and constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi, with more than 80% indigenous content. Its construction highlights the contribution of Indian defence industries and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to naval modernisation.

The vessel is designed for operations in coastal and shallow waters. Its key roles include:

  • Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW): Detecting and countering underwater threats, particularly enemy submarines.
  • Underwater surveillance: Monitoring underwater activity in coastal waters.
  • Low-Intensity Maritime Operations (LIMO): Undertaking maritime security operations in limited-intensity threat environments.
  • Mine warfare-related tasks: Supporting operations involving naval mines.

Origin of the Name

INS Mangrol derives its name from Mangrol, a coastal town and prominent fishing harbour in Gujarat’s Junagadh district. It also carries forward the legacy of the earlier INS Mangrol (M85), a minesweeper that served the Indian Navy until April 2004.
