Indian physicist Ashoke Sen wins Oskar Klein medal

Why in News?

Noted Indian theoretical physicist Ashoke Sen has been awarded the prestigious Oskar Klein Medal for his contributions to theoretical physics. He is the first Indian to receive this honour, as announced by the Bengaluru-based International Centre for Theoretical Sciences (ICTS), where he serves as a professor.

About the Oskar Klein Medal

  • Awarded by: Stockholm University and the Nobel Committee for Physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
  • Established: 1988.
  • Frequency: Awarded annually.
  • Field: Theoretical physics.
  • Significance: Recognises outstanding contributions to theoretical physics.

About Ashoke Sen

  • Ashoke Sen is a renowned Indian theoretical physicist known for his pioneering work in string theory.
  • He has previously received the Dirac Medal and the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics.
  • His research has contributed significantly to the understanding of the relationship between quantum theory and gravity.

What Is String Theory?

  • String theory is a theoretical framework that proposes that fundamental particles may be represented by tiny, one-dimensional objects called strings.
  • Different vibrational modes of these strings correspond to different particles and their properties.
  • It seeks to reconcile quantum mechanics and general relativity, two major frameworks of modern physics.
  • It is an important approach towards developing a unified description of fundamental particles and forces, including gravity.
  • However, string theory has not yet been experimentally confirmed as a complete description of nature.
