Indian Space Situational Awareness Report 2025 (ISSAR-2025)

The Indian Space Situational Awareness Report 2025 (Indian Space Situational Awareness Report: ISSAR-2025) was released by V. Narayanan on April 8, 2026, during the SMOPS-2026 conference in Bengaluru, highlighting global and Indian space activities.

Institutional Framework

The Indian Space Research Organisation operates the ISRO System for Safe and Sustainable Space Operations Management (IS4OM) as the nodal body for:

  • Space Situational Awareness (SSA)
  • Space sustainability efforts

Global Space Activity in 2025

  • 328 launch attempts, with 315 successful launches
  • 4198 operational satellites placed in orbit
  • 4651 new space objects added
  • Highest number of launches since the beginning of the space age

Lunar Missions and Private Sector Role

  • Four lunar missions were launched in 2025
  • All missions were led by private players, indicating rising commercial participation
  • Blue Ghost Mission 1 became the first privately owned spacecraft to successfully soft-land on the Moon

India’s Space Assets

  • Total of 144 Indian spacecraft launched (including private and academic missions)
  • Operational satellites:
    • 22 in Low Earth Orbit (LEO)
    • 31 in Geosynchronous Earth Orbit (GEO)
  • NVS-02 continues in elliptical Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO)

Deep Space Missions: India has two active deep space missions:

  • Chandrayaan-2 Orbiter
  • Aditya-L1 located at the Sun–Earth Lagrange point
