India’s Bimal Patel elected judge of International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea

Bimal N. Patel has been elected as a Judge of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea for the 2026–2035 term.

  • He was elected during the 36th Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, held at the United Nations Headquarters from 15–19 June.
  • He secured 115 votes out of 168 valid votes cast by member states.
  • He will assume office on 1 October 2026, succeeding Neeru Chadha, whose nine-year term ends in September 2026.
  • The election ensures India’s continued representation in one of the world’s premier international judicial bodies dealing with the law of the sea.

About the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS)

  • Established: Under the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
  • Headquarters: Hamburg (Germany).
  • Nature: An independent international judicial body.
  • Composition: 21 independent judges, elected by the States Parties to UNCLOS.
  • Judges serve a nine-year term and are elected based on equitable geographical representation.
  • Composition: The Tribunal’s composition reflects equitable geographical representation, with judges elected from: Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Western Europe and other States, and Eastern Europe.
  • Jurisdiction and Functions: It has jurisdiction over any dispute concerning the interpretation or application of the Convention, and over all matters specifically provided for in any other agreement which confers jurisdiction on the Tribunal.
