India’s first Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched a first-of-its-kind Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus from India Gate in New Delhi.

Key points

  • Puri said 15 green hydrogen buses will be operational by the end of 2023.
  • Puri added that the hydrogen fuel-powered vehicle can be refilled in a few minutes, nearly as fast as fossil fuel can fill an internal combustion engine.
  • The project for green hydrogen fuel cell bus has been undertaken by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) in collaboration with Tata Motors.
  • Indian Oil has initiated a scientifically designed program to undertake operational trials of 15 fuel cell buses powered by green hydrogen on the identified routes in Delhi, Haryana and U.P.

Fuel cell

  • A hydrogen fuel cell uses the chemical energy of hydrogen to cleanly and efficiently produce electricity. If hydrogen is the fuel, the only products are electricity, water, and heat.
  • Fuel cells are unique in terms of the variety of their potential applications; they can use a wide range of fuels and feedstocks and can provide power for systems as large as a utility power station and as small as a laptop computer.
  • Fuel cells work like batteries, but they do not run down or need recharging. They produce electricity and heat as long as fuel is supplied.
