India’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less tolling system

Why in the News?
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has operationalised India’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-less tolling system at the Choryasi Toll Plaza on May 1, 2026.

About MLFF Tolling System
Multi-Lane Free Flow Tolling (MLFF) is an advanced toll collection mechanism that allows vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping. It eliminates physical barriers and reduces congestion.

How it Works

  • Uses RFID-based FASTag for automatic fee deduction.
  • Employs Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to read Vehicle Registration Numbers (VRN).
  • High-performance sensors and cameras ensure seamless toll collection while vehicles are in motion.

Institutional Framework
The system has been implemented by Indian Highways Management Company Limited, the tolling arm of NHAI, in collaboration with ICICI Bank, which developed the toll collection infrastructure.

Significance

  • Reduces travel time and fuel consumption by eliminating stoppages.
  • Minimises traffic congestion at busy toll plazas.
  • Enhances efficiency and transparency in toll collection.
  • Marks a major milestone in India’s electronic toll collection journey, which began in 2014.

Economic and Environmental Impact
The system lowers logistics costs, improves highway efficiency, and reduces vehicular emissions due to uninterrupted movement.
