Jodhpur Mojari gets GI tag

The Government of India has granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Jodhpur Mojari, the city’s nearly 200-year-old traditional handcrafted footwear.

  • The GI certificate was handed over by the Geographical Indications Registry to the Jodhpur Handicraft Exporters Association and the Gram Vikas Seva Sansthan.
  • The GI tag marks a significant milestone for Jodhpur’s handicraft industry and is expected to enhance the livelihoods of local artisans.

About Jodhpuri Mojari

  • Jodhpuri Mojari is a traditional handcrafted leather footwear known for its intricate embroidery, fine craftsmanship, and distinctive design.
  • The craft is primarily practiced by the Jinagar community, who were traditionally saddle makers.
  • Historically, Mojaris were patronised by the royal families of Rajasthan, before becoming a distinctive cultural and artisanal identity of Jodhpur.
  • Over time, the footwear has evolved while retaining its traditional techniques and craftsmanship, making it one of Rajasthan’s most recognised handicrafts.
