Kaziranga records first yellow-throated marten

Why in News?

The Yellow-throated Marten has been recorded for the first time in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The species was photographed during routine camera-trap monitoring conducted by the Kaziranga Tiger Cell, confirming its presence in the park’s semi-evergreen forest patches. 

About the Yellow-Throated Marten 

  • Scientific Name: Martes flavigula
  • Family: Mustelidae
  • The Mustelidae family includes species such as badgers, weasels, otters, ferrets, and martens.
  • It is the largest species of marten in the world.
  • Easily identified by its:
    • Bright golden-yellow throat and neck.
    • Yellowish-brown coloration towards the lower back.
    • Long, bushy tail measuring about two-thirds of its body length.
    • Sleek, elongated body adapted for agile movement through forests.
  • Known for its intelligence, agility, and resourcefulness.
  • The species has nine recognized subspecies across Asia.
  • Its range extends:
    • Across the Himalayas from Afghanistan to Myanmar.
    • Through Southeast Asia into Malaysia and Indonesia.
  • In India, it occurs in Himalayan forests, northeastern forests, and parts of the Western Ghats.
  • Habitat Prefers:
    • Dense tropical and subtropical forests.
    • Temperate forests.
    • Semi-evergreen and evergreen forest ecosystems.
  • It is primarily arboreal but also spends considerable time on the ground.
  • The yellow-throated marten is a mesopredator (mid-level predator).
  • It helps maintain ecosystem balance by controlling populations of:
    • Small mammals,
    • Birds,
    • Reptiles,
    • Insects.
  • It is also known to consume fruits, contributing to seed dispersal.
  • Unlike many mustelids, it is often active during the day.
  • Known for hunting alone or in small groups.
  • Despite its moderate size, it is famous for taking on prey larger than itself, earning a reputation for “fighting above its weight class.”
