Kishau Multipurpose Project

Why in News?

On 15 September 2026, the Chief Ministers of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pave the way for the long-pending 422 MW Kishau Multipurpose Project. Following the agreement, the project is expected to be placed before the Union Cabinet for approval.

About Kishau Multipurpose Project

The Kishau Multipurpose Project is a proposed dam and hydropower project on the Tons River, a major tributary of the Yamuna River, along the border of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The project site spans Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh and Dehradun district of Uttarakhand.

The project envisages construction of a 232.6-metre-high concrete gravity dam and is expected to generate around 1,476 million units of clean hydropower. It is estimated to cost approximately ₹15,000 crore.

The project has multiple objectives, including electricity generation, irrigation and water supply. It is expected to create irrigation potential of about 97,076 hectares and provide water for drinking and industrial purposes to the beneficiary states of Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand signed an MoU to establish a joint venture for the project in June 2015, following which Kishau Corporation Ltd. was incorporated in January 2017.

The Kishau Dam is one of three storage projects planned in the upper reaches of the Yamuna and its tributaries following the 12 May 1994 MoU among the Yamuna basin States—undivided Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh—and the National Capital Territory of Delhi for the allocation of Yamuna waters.
