Lake Kariba

Lake Kariba, the world’s largest human-made lake by volume, has witnessed a significant recovery in water levels after years of severe decline caused by prolonged droughts and heatwaves.

About Lake Kariba

  • Lake Kariba was created by damming the Zambezi River at the Kariba Gorge.
  • It is located in Central Africa between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • The lake is a crucial source of hydroelectric power for both countries.

Declining Water Levels

Traditionally, Lake Kariba experiences seasonal fluctuations in water levels due to rainfall patterns. However, since the 2010s repeated droughts, rising temperatures, and frequent heatwaves have prevented the lake from reaching full capacity.

In 2024 water levels fell to just 13% of usable storage capacity for electricity generation. This raised serious concerns over power shortages in Zambia and Zimbabwe, both heavily dependent on hydropower from the Kariba Dam. Conditions have improved considerably since March 2026.

Significance

The recovery of Lake Kariba is important because:

  • It improves hydropower generation capacity in Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • It reduces the risk of electricity shortages and load shedding.
  • It highlights the strong connection between climate variability and water security in Africa.
