Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla constitutes Committee on Empowerment of Women

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has constituted the Parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women for the current term. BJP Lok Sabha MP Dr. Daggubati Purandeswari has been appointed as the Chairperson of the committee.

The committee comprises 28 members, including 18 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 members from the Rajya Sabha. Prominent members from the Lok Sabha include Hema Malini, Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Iqra Choudhary. Members from the Rajya Sabha include Sudha Murty, P. T. Usha and Swati Maliwal among others.

The Committee on Empowerment of Women is reconstituted every year, and its term does not exceed one year. The members are expected to work collectively beyond party lines for the welfare and empowerment of women in the country.

The committee was first constituted on April 29, 1997, during the 11th Lok Sabha, following two identical resolutions adopted by both Houses of Parliament on March 8, 1996. The panel was established with the objective of improving the status and welfare of women in India.
