- The Maratha Light Infantry, one of the oldest regiments of the Indian Army and the recipient of 56 battle honours, celebrated its 250th anniversary on February 4, 2018.
- The celebration opened with a function on February 4, at the Manekshaw Centre where a coffee-table book on the infantry, ‘Victory and Valour’, was released.
About the Maratha Light Infatnry
- The first battalion of this Regiment was raised as ‘second battalion Bombay Sepoys’ in 1768 which was later known as ‘jangi paltan’.
- February 4 also has a historical significance as on this day in 1670 Chhatrapati Shivaji of Maratha, conquered Fort Kondana, famously known as Sinhgarh.
