Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on March 24, 2020 announced the bifurcation of the Nagapattinam district and creation of a new district formed with Mayiladuthurai as its headquarters.
State chief minister made this announcement in the state assembly on March 24.
Mayiladuthurai will be the 38th district in Tamil Nadu.
