Ministry for Education Releases AISHE Reports for 2022-23 & 2023-24

The Union Ministry of Education released the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) reports for 2022–23 and 2023–24 on 8 July, providing comprehensive statistics on India’s higher education sector.

About AISHE

The All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) is the Government of India’s primary database on higher education. It collects detailed information from Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the country through a web-based Data Capture Format (DCF).

Data Collection Process

  • Participation in AISHE is voluntary.
  • Data is self-reported by Higher Education Institutions through the AISHE web portal.
  • Institutions provide information on student enrolment, faculty and staff, infrastructure, examination results, and other institutional parameters .

Importance of AISHE: AISHE serves as the official source of higher education statistics in India and supports policy formulation, educational planning, monitoring and evaluation of higher education, and evidence-based decision-making by governments and institutions.

Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER): The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) is calculated as the ratio of students enrolled in higher education to the population in the 18–23 years age group, based on 2011 population projections. The GER has shown steady growth:

  • 2014–15: 23.7
  • 2022–23: 29.5
  • 2023–24: 30.0

Female Participation Shows Strong Growth: The Female GER has increased significantly:

  • 2014–15: 22.9
  • 2022–23: 30.2
  • 2023–24: 31.2

Gender Parity Index (GPI): The Gender Parity Index (GPI) measures the relative access to higher education between females and males by comparing female GER with male GER. GPI (2023–24): 1.08 . A GPI above 1 indicates that female participation in higher education is higher than male participation.

Growth in STEM Enrolment: Enrolment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines has increased substantially:

  • 2014–15: 91.5 lakh students
  • 2023–24: 1.02 crore students

The rise reflects India’s growing emphasis on science, technology, innovation and skilled human resource development.
