Ministry of Textiles to celebrate 12th National Handloom Day on 7 August 2026

Why in News?
The Union Ministry of Textiles will celebrate the 12th National Handloom Day on 7 August 2026 at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre (RBCC), New Delhi, to honour India’s handloom heritage and recognise the contribution of handloom weavers to the country’s cultural and economic development.

About National Handloom Day

  • National Handloom Day is observed annually on 7 August.
  • It commemorates the Swadeshi Movement, launched on 7 August 1905, which promoted the use of indigenous products and provided a major boost to India’s handloom industry.
  • The day recognises the contribution of handloom weavers in preserving India’s rich cultural heritage and supporting rural livelihoods.
  • It was instituted in 2015, and 2026 marks the 12th National Handloom Day.

National Handloom Day 2026 Highlights

  • The national celebration will be held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre (RBCC), New Delhi.
  • 22 awards for the year 2025 will be presented to outstanding handloom weavers:
    • 3 Sant Kabir Handloom Awards
    • 19 National Handloom Awards
  • The awards recognise excellence in craftsmanship, innovation and preservation and promotion of India’s traditional handloom heritage.
  • The occasion will also witness the release of four commemorative postage stamps showcasing India’s diverse handloom weaving traditions.

Sant Kabir Handloom Award

  • The highest national honour in the handloom sector.
  • Conferred on master weavers for exceptional craftsmanship, innovation and lifetime contribution to handloom weaving.

National Handloom Award

  • Presented to outstanding handloom weavers for excellence in design, weaving techniques, product quality and preservation of traditional skills.
