The Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) has launched Mission Golden Spice, a ₹175.45-crore initiative aimed at transforming Meghalaya’s GI-tagged Lakadong turmeric into a globally recognised premium spice.
The Integrated Lakadong Turmeric Value Chain Enhancement Project was launched by Union Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia along with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma.
The five-year mission (2025–2030) will be implemented in two phases, with the first phase focusing on strengthening the Lakadong turmeric value chain, followed by expansion and scale-up in the second phase.
About Lakadong turmeric
Lakadong turmeric, grown primarily in Meghalaya, contains around 7–10% curcumin, nearly four times the global average. Its high curcumin content makes it one of the world’s premium turmeric varieties, with significant potential in the nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, wellness and export markets.
The mission aims to strengthen the entire value chain, including cultivation, processing, value addition, branding, marketing and exports, thereby improving farmers’ incomes and creating greater economic opportunities in the region.
Mission Golden Spice also seeks to position Meghalaya as a global hub for high-curcumin organic turmeric and establish Lakadong turmeric as a globally recognised premium spice, while promoting sustainable agriculture and enhancing the livelihoods of farmers in the Northeast.
