Mission “Senehjori” launched for Assam Muga Silk

Why in News?

The Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), along with the Chief Minister of Assam, launched Mission “Senehjori” – Assam Muga Silk USP, a comprehensive cluster-based initiative aimed at transforming Assam’s Muga silk sector into a globally competitive, high-value luxury textile ecosystem.

About Mission Senehjori

  • It is a flagship initiative led by the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) in convergence with the Government of Assam, the Central Silk Board, the Ministry of Textiles and other central agencies.
  • The mission seeks to strengthen the entire Muga silk value chain, from host-plant cultivation and silkworm seed production to reeling, weaving, branding, export promotion, digital traceability and tourism.
  • It aims to create a premium, traceable and export-oriented Muga silk economy under the unified brand identity “Senehjori”.
  • The initiative adopts a cluster-based approach covering major Muga silk-producing districts of Assam, including Jorhat, Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Majuli and Sualkuchi.

  • Strengthening host-plant ecology and silkworm seed production systems.
  • Establishment of modern reeling and processing infrastructure.
  • Promotion of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs).
  • Creation of Common Facility Centres (CFCs).
  • Enforcement of GI authentication and quality assurance mechanisms.
  • Development of digital traceability systems and global market linkages.
  • Promotion of silk-based tourism and branding initiatives.

About Muga Silk

  • Muga silk is the world’s only naturally golden-coloured silk.
  • It is endemic to Assam and is renowned for its natural sheen, durability and exclusivity.
  • It was India’s first silk to receive a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
  • Assam accounts for nearly 90% of global Muga silk production.
  • The sector supports approximately 2.6 lakh rearer and weaver families in the state.
  • Muga silk is considered a premium luxury textile due to its rarity, strength and cultural significance.
