Morels (Morchella) cultivation under controlled conditions

Researchers at SKUAST Srinagar have successfully cultivated Morels (Morchella)—one of the world’s most expensive and rare edible mushrooms—for the first time under controlled conditions.

A Highly Prized Delicacy
Morchella, locally known as Kangaech, is a gourmet mushroom valued for its rich flavour, high nutritional content, and medicinal properties. It commands a premium price ranging from ₹15,000 to ₹40,000 per kilogram in markets.

Traditionally Found in the Wild
Morels naturally grow in specific high-altitude forest ecosystems during a short rainy season. Their collection is extremely challenging, requiring foragers to search dense forests under harsh conditions, often with uncertain yields.

Scientific Challenge Overcome
Artificial cultivation of Morels has long been considered difficult due to their:

  • Complex life cycle
  • Symbiotic ecological behaviour
  • Highly specific environmental requirements

The mushroom requires precise combinations of soil moisture, temperature, and climatic conditions. Additionally, different strains of Morels depend on associations with specific plant species, making controlled cultivation particularly challenging.

Breakthrough Achievement
SKUAST’s success in cultivating Morels under controlled conditions marks a significant advancement in agricultural biotechnology and fungal research. This could reduce dependence on wild harvesting and ensure sustainable production.
