Justice A K Patnaik to hold inquiry into allegations of conspiracy against CJI

  • The Supreme Court of India on April 25, 2019 constituted a one-man panel of retired judge Justice A K Patnaik to hold an inquiry into the allegations of a larger conspiracy to frame Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and fixing of benches in the top court.
  • The apex court bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra asked the Directors of CBI and IB and Delhi Police Commissioner to cooperate with Justice Patnaik during the inquiry.
  • The top court, however, said that the inquiry will not deal with the allegations of sexual harassment against the CJI. The court said the outcome of the inquiry will not affect the in-house committee which is dealing with the complaint against the CJI.
  • Earlier, Justice S A Bobde, the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, was on April 22 appointed to conduct an in-house inquiry into the allegations of sexual harassment levelled against Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi. The other two members of the committee are Justice N.V. Ramana and Justice Indira Banerjee. However Justice Ramana recluse himself form the committee, and Justice Indu Malhotra was later inducted in the committee.
