National Workshop on “SUMAN Roadmap 2030

Why in News?
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) organised a two-day National Workshop on “SUMAN Roadmap 2030 – Accelerating the Continuum of Care” in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, on September 2–3, 2026.

Key Points

  • SUMAN: Surakshit Matritva Aashwasan (SUMAN) — a government initiative focused on ensuring dignified, respectful and quality maternal and newborn healthcare.
  • The workshop brought together 200+ participants, including Mission Directors and senior officials from States and UTs.
  • Registration of newly married couples was highlighted as an important intervention to:
    • Prevent unintended pregnancies.
    • Promote family planning.
    • Enable timely preparation for healthy and planned pregnancies.

SUMAN Roadmap 2030

The roadmap follows a two-part approach:

Section A – High-Focus Areas

  • Targets 13 High-Focus States and 130 districts.
  • Focuses resources and interventions on areas contributing disproportionately to maternal and newborn deaths.

Section B – Nationwide Strategy

  • Covers all States and Union Territories.
  • Aims to sustain improvements in maternal and newborn health and help India achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets.
