Nav Trinjan initiative

Why in News?

On 25 October 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the Nav Trinjan initiative in Punjab during the 139th episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat. The initiative integrates organic cotton cultivation with traditional handloom weaving to promote sustainable agriculture, preserve cultural heritage and generate livelihood opportunities, particularly for women.

Key Features of Nav Trinjan

• Implementing organisation: Kheti Virasat Mission.
• Region: Punjab’s Malwa region.
• Organic cotton cultivation: Natural cotton is grown without chemical inputs.
• Naturally coloured cotton: Cultivation of naturally coloured cotton helps reduce dependence on chemical dyes in textile production.
• Traditional handloom weaving: A weaving school has been established to preserve traditional weaving skills and transfer them to the next generation.
• Women’s empowerment: Women are acquiring weaving skills and developing additional sources of income.
