New Evidence from Neptune’s Moons and Rings

New observations by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) of Neptune’s moons and rings have provided evidence of a major cosmic catastrophe that may have occurred billions of years ago after the planet captured its largest moon, Triton.

Researchers used JWST to study three of Neptune’s small inner moons—Proteus, Larissa and Galatea—along with its inner dusty rings.

The observations detected clay minerals rich in magnesium on these moons and in the ring material. Such minerals are known to occur on Ceres, a dwarf planet in the asteroid belt, and in certain meteorites.

Triton: The Possible Culprit

Scientists believe that Triton’s capture by Neptune may have triggered a massive gravitational disturbance, creating a kind of celestial demolition derby among Neptune’s original moons.

Triton is currently Neptune’s largest moon and is slightly larger than Pluto but smaller than Earth’s Moon.

The researchers propose that Triton was originally located in the Kuiper Belt, a region beyond Neptune containing numerous icy bodies, including Pluto and other dwarf planets.

How Was Triton Captured?

During the early history of the Solar System, roughly 4.5 billion years ago, the giant planets were still migrating and their gravitational interactions were much more chaotic.

Sometime during the first billion years after the Solar System formed, Neptune is believed to have captured Triton through gravitational interactions.

The capture would have disturbed Neptune’s existing satellite system, potentially causing collisions and fragmentation among its original moons and producing material that eventually contributed to the formation of the inner dusty rings

Triton has an unusual retrograde orbit, meaning it travels around Neptune in the opposite direction to Neptune’s rotation.

This strongly supports the idea that Triton did not form alongside Neptune, unlike many of the planet’s original moons, but was instead captured from elsewhere.

What is the Kuiper Belt?

The Kuiper Belt is a doughnut-shaped region of icy and rocky objects located beyond Neptune’s orbit. It contains Pluto, numerous dwarf planets, icy bodies and other remnants from the early Solar System.
