Operation Trident: Crackdown on Transnational Drug Trafficking

Why in News?

The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) launched Operation Trident in the early hours of 23 October 2026, targeting transnational drug-trafficking and financial networks across Assam, Mizoram and Manipur.

  • Scale: 38 teams conducted simultaneous operations at 38 locations.
  • Agencies involved: NCB, Mizoram Police and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
  • Objective: Dismantle the operational and financial networks supporting transnational drug-trafficking syndicates.

Key Features of Operation Trident

  • Multi-state operation: Coordinated action across three northeastern states.
  • Multi-agency coordination: Intelligence sharing and synchronised operational planning among enforcement agencies.
  • Network-centric approach: Focuses on identifying drug-trafficking kingpins, associates and wider criminal networks rather than concentrating only on drug seizures.
  • Financial disruption: Targets the financial infrastructure that enables trafficking syndicates to operate.
  • Transnational focus: Addresses organised trafficking networks operating across national borders.

Shift in India’s Narcotics Control Strategy

Operation Trident reflects a shift from a seizure-centric approach to a network-centric and financial-disruption approach.

Link with the Vision Document on Narcotics Control (2026–2029)

The operation aligns with the government’s stated policy of zero tolerance against drugs and the Vision Document on Narcotics Control (2026–2029).

Its strategic priorities include:

  • Dismantling organised drug-trafficking networks.
  • Strengthening intelligence sharing among enforcement agencies.
  • Disrupting the financial backbone of narcotics syndicates.
  • Improving coordination among central agencies and state police forces.
