Pacific Islands Forum 2026

Why in News?

 At the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) meeting held in Palau from 30 August to 4 September 2026, the United States and Australia announced a combined funding package of about US$580 million for Pacific Island countries amid growing competition with China for influence in the region. 

Australia announced an A$600 million (about US$430 million) package to combat drug trafficking, including enhanced aerial surveillance and training for police and border officials. 

Separately, the United States announced US$150 million in funding, including US$60 million to help Pacific Island countries strengthen energy security by expanding fuel-storage capacity and improving electricity-grid stability.

China Factor 

China, which has become a major donor to the Pacific region, has objected to Taiwan’s participation in the annual PIF meeting because Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory. Palau, which hosted the 2026 meeting, is one of the three Pacific Island countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Taiwan, the other two being the Marshall Islands and Tuvalu.

About  Pacific Islands Forum 

Founded in 1971, the Pacific Islands Forum is a regional organisation comprising 18 members, including Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Palau, Samoa, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu. 

The forum provides a platform for cooperation on regional security, climate change, sustainable development, fisheries and economic issues. 

The growing engagement of the US, Australia and China highlights the increasing geostrategic importance of the Pacific Islands in the wider Indo-Pacific region.
