Path of Totality

North America witnessed a rare astronomical phenomenon – a total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024.

  • Beginning over the Pacific Ocean, this celestial event traversed Mexico, United States and Canada.
  • As per Indian Standard Time (IST), the total solar eclipse began at 9:12 pm on 8th April and ended at 2:22 am on 9th April. However, it was visible to skywatchers in India.
  • This was the first total solar eclipse to pass through North America in seven years, and the next one will not be seen from the contiguous U.S. until Aug. 23, 2044, according to NASA.
  • A solar eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon where the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and blocks the Sun’s light either entirely or partially.
  • When the moon completely covers the sun, it casts a shadow on Earth, forming what is called a “path of totality.”
