Piece of SpaceX rocket crashed into the moon

Why in News?

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket stage, which had been drifting in space since January 2025, is believed to have unintentionally crashed into the Moon at high speed on 5 August 2026.

Key Highlights

  • The object was the second stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.
  • It was used to launch two commercial lunar landers—one by Firefly Aerospace (USA) and another from Japan—towards the Moon in January 2025.
  • Measuring roughly the height of a five-storey building, the rocket stage had exhausted its fuel and could no longer be controlled.
  • Earlier this year, astronomers determined that its orbit would eventually intersect with the Moon, leading to the impact.

Why Did the Rocket Stage Remain in Space?

  • Normally, the second stage of a launch vehicle:
    • Re-enters Earth’s atmosphere and burns up, or
    • Falls into the ocean after completing its mission.
  • However, lunar missions require greater velocity and thrust than missions to Earth orbit.
  • Consequently, the second stage remained in deep space after delivering the payload and became space debris.

  • Space debris refers to non-functional, human-made objects orbiting Earth or travelling through space.
  • It includes:
    • Defunct satellites
    • Spent rocket stages
    • Mission-related objects
    • Fragments produced by collisions or explosions
  • Space debris poses a collision risk to operational satellites and future space missions.

Previous Moon Impact Events

  • 2022: A Chinese rocket stage unintentionally crashed into the Moon after a lunar mission.
  • 2009: NASA deliberately crashed a rocket stage during the LCROSS mission to study water ice and lunar material.
  • 1970s: NASA intentionally impacted Saturn V rocket stages on the Moon to study lunar seismic activity.

Notable Lunar Crash Missions

  • Luna-25 (Russia, 2023): Crashed after losing control during its lunar landing attempt. Its plutonium-238 power source is believed to remain safely on the lunar surface.
  • Chandrayaan-2 (India, 2019): The Vikram lander crash-landed during its descent. The orbiter continues to operate successfully and has provided valuable scientific data.
  • Beresheet (Israel, 2019): Crash-landed on the Moon during its landing attempt. It carried tardigrades, microscopic organisms known for their extraordinary ability to survive extreme conditions.
