PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana: Gaya Tops District Rankings

Why in News?

Gaya district in Bihar secured first position among the best-performing districts under the Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana (PMDDKY), followed by Nagaur in Rajasthan and Umaria in Madhya Pradesh. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan attended an event in New Delhi on October 11, 2026, marking one year of the scheme. Eighteen districts were also recognised for their performance across six key objectives.

About PMDDKY

The Prime Minister Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana is a six-year initiative beginning in 2025–26, aimed at transforming agriculture and allied activities across 100 Aspirational Agricultural Districts. These districts were identified based on low agricultural productivity, low cropping intensity and low disbursement of agricultural credit. The selection also considered the share of net cropped area and operational holdings in each State and Union Territory, ensuring that every State has at least one selected district.

The scheme focuses on six key objectives: improving agricultural productivity; promoting crop diversification and sustainable farming practices; strengthening post-harvest storage; improving irrigation infrastructure; enhancing access to agricultural credit; and improving governance and service delivery.

PMDDKY is implemented through the convergence of 36 Central schemes across 11 Ministries and Departments, along with State schemes and private-sector participation. This approach enables interventions suited to the agricultural priorities of individual districts.

Implementation Structure

The scheme follows a three-tier implementation mechanism. At the district level, the District Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana Samiti, headed by the District Collector or District Magistrate, prepares and implements the District Action Plan. At the State level, the State Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana Samiti, headed by the Chief Secretary, reviews and monitors district plans. At the national level, the National Executive Committee is headed by the Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, while the National Monitoring Committee is headed by the Secretary, Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.

Khet Bachao Abhiyan

The Khet Bachao Abhiyan, scheduled from October 22 to November 30 across all States, aims to promote soil health through the balanced and judicious use of fertilisers. It complements the broader objective of encouraging sustainable agricultural practices.
