PM Modi Highlights Revival of Kashmir’s Traditional Vagu Mat and Tripura’s Chongpreng

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 26 highlighted the revival of Kashmir’s traditional ‘Vagu’ mat, praising local artisans for preserving the centuries-old craft.

Addressing the nation during the 136th episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of preserving India’s rich cultural heritage.

He said the resurgence of the traditional handwoven mat demonstrated how talent, dedication and determination can help revive India’s traditional crafts.

It takes approximately four days for two artisans to complete a single Vagu mat.

The Vagu mat is considered both unique and eco-friendly, reflecting the potential of traditional crafts to promote sustainable products.

About Chongpreng’

A distinctive feature of the mat is its ability to provide coolness during summer and warmth during winter.

The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s rich diversity of traditional musical heritage.

He praised efforts to revive the ‘Chongpreng’, a traditional string musical instrument from Tripura.

The Chongpreng is particularly popular among tribal communities in Tripura.

The instrument is made of bamboo and has three strings.

It produces a melodious sound resembling that of the Sarod.

Prime Minister Modi urged people to promote and preserve indigenous musical traditions and traditional art forms.
