PM Vishwakarma Scheme

Why in News?

The Pradhan Mantri Vishwakarma Kaushal Samman Yojana (PM Vishwakarma) was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 17 September 2023 to support traditional artisans and craftspeople through skill training, modern toolkits, concessional credit and market support. So far, around 30 lakh beneficiaries have been registered, of whom approximately 24.50 lakh have received Basic Skill Training.

About PM Vishwakarma

PM Vishwakarma provides end-to-end support to artisans and craftspeople engaged in 18 traditional trades who work with their hands and tools. The scheme aims to formally recognise them as Vishwakarmas and improve their skills, productivity, access to technology, credit and markets.

Around 18.15 lakh modern toolkits have been delivered through India Post. About 6.18 lakh beneficiaries have received loans of up to ₹1 lakh at a concessional interest rate of 5% per annum, amounting to approximately ₹5,297 crore.

The scheme is jointly implemented by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MoMSME), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), and Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance.

Eligibility

A beneficiary under PM Vishwakarma should be at least 18 years old and must be engaged in one of the specified 18 traditional family-based trades on a self-employment or unorganised-sector basis. The person should work primarily with hands and tools and should not have availed of a similar credit-based self-employment or business-development scheme of the Central or State Government during the preceding five years.
