Prahar Light Machine Guns (LMGs)

Adani Defence and Aerospace has delivered the first batch of 2,000 Prahar Light Machine Guns (LMGs) to India’s armed forces, marking a significant milestone in indigenous defence manufacturing.

The 7.62 mm calibre Prahar LMG, manufactured at the company’s Small Arms Complex near Gwalior, is part of a larger procurement order of 41,000 LMGs for the country’s security forces.

The Prahar system is based on the Negev NG7 platform and operates using an open-bolt mechanism with a rotating bolt driven by gas pressure on a piston. Designed for operational efficiency, it features a 508 mm (20-inch) barrel and an overall length of 1,000 mm, which can be reduced to 820 mm when the stock is collapsed—making it suitable for paratroopers and mobile operations.

Weighing 7.6 kg (excluding magazine), the weapon is significantly lighter than many competing systems, which are estimated to be 22% to 38% heavier, enhancing ease of handling and mobility in combat situations.

Officials noted that the induction of Prahar LMGs is expected to boost infantry firepower, while also supporting the government’s push for self-reliance in defence production under the “Make in India” initiative.
